Description
This course is designed for experienced tree climbers who wish to develop the skills required to carry out pruning operations in the crown of a tree. It covers the principles of pruning, target pruning techniques, selection of appropriate cuts, and safe use of a chainsaw from a rope and harness. Candidates will gain the knowledge and practical ability to undertake pruning to industry best practice, in compliance with current UK legislation and safety standards.

Suitable for people working in Forestry, Arboriculture, Estate Management, Woodland, Horticulture, Agriculture, Local Authority, Ecology, Conservation.

This course is for candidates over 16 years old.

Due to the physical nature of this course, a minimum level of fitness is required, along with a good head for heights.

Do I need previous Qualification or Experience?

Experience tree climbing and working in trees is recommended. 

This course requires the following prerequisite certificate of competences: Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting, Felling Small Trees up to 380mm, Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue and, Using a Chainsaw from Rope and Harness (formerly CS30, CS31, CS38 and, CS39).

What will be covered in the course?

  • Identifying the information required for an effective risk assessment.

  • Identifying the potential hazards/risks involved with tree climbing and rescue.

  • Understanding legislation and industry guides relevant for working at height and carrying out work in trees to industry best practises.

  • Inspection of equipment used for working at height.

  • Carrying out a visual tree assessment.

  • Identify Personal Protective Equipment required for tree climbing.

  • Assessing the use of a selection of cutting equipment.

  • Techniques used for removing branches.

  • Identify where to place final pruning cut to minimise damage to the tree

  • How to plan and implement a crown reduction, thin and lift for tree health and aesthetics.

What equipment will I need?

  • PPE needs to be in good order and meets the minimum standards. Helmet with chin strap, ear and eye protection (If you are unsure please contact us at info@practicalarb.co.uk).

  • Chainsaw boots.

  • Type C chainsaw trousers.

  • Clothing suitable for time of year.

Climbing equipment need to have an in date LOLER certificate or, if purchased with in a six-month period, receipts. LOLER certificate or receipts must cover the period of training and assessment. Climbing equipment must be in good order and meet minimum standards (If you are unsure, please contact us at info@practicalarb.co.uk). Minimum equipment required:

  • Climbing harness

  • Two climbing ropes (minimum length 35m)

  • Work positioning system (side strop)

  • Two prussick loops

  • Four carabiners

  • Climbing spikes

  • Personal first aid kit

  • Rescue knife

  • Hand saw

  • Top handle chainsaw (recommended 12" guide bar) with tool strop

  • Maintenance and sharpening kit for chainsaw

  • Fuel and chain oil
