Description

Learn the skills required to safely and effectively fell and process trees up to 380mm in diameter. On this course you will learn the techniques to directional fell a tree, assessing tree condition, choosing the right equipment, and planning for safe felling operations. Additionally, candidates will learn how to safely and effectively process a felled tree by de-limbing/snedding and cross-cutting. Also taught will be the correct and safe techniques used to remove hung up trees.

This course is for candidates over 16 years old.

Candidates are required to have a minimum level of fitness, due to the physical nature of the course.

Medium Fell (CS32)

Do I need previous Qualification or Experience?

Previous industry experience felling trees will be helpful.

You need to hold a certificate of competence in the following qualifications: Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting and Felling Small Trees up to 380mm (formerly CS30 and CS31).

What will be covered in the course?

  • Identifying the potential hazards/risks involved with felling operations.

  • Setting up a safe working site.

  • Assess trees to be felled for risks and hazards.

  • Assess leaning trees and identify the correct felling techniques.

  • Assessing hung up trees and identifying the correct techniques and tools to remove them safely.

  • Inspecting and safe configuration of a hand winch.

  • Using a hand winch to safely remove a hung up tree.

  • De-limbing and snedding techniques to safely and effectively process a felled tree.

  • Cross-cutting techniques for cutting timber over 380mm accurately to length and stacking to ensure a safe working site.

What equipment will I need?

  • PPE that is in good order and meets the minimum standards. Chainsaw trousers, type A or C. Chainsaw boots. Chainsaw gloves. Helmet with eye and ear protection. (If you are unsure, please contact us at info@practicalarb.co.uk)

  • Clothing suitable for time of year.

  • Rear handle chainsaw in good working order with a 15" guide bar.

  • Fuel and chain oil.

  • Maintenance and sharpening tools suitable for chainsaw.

  • Felling bar and timber tongs.

  • Felling wedges suitable for trees over 380mm up to 760mm.

  • Sledge hammer or similar for using with felling wedges.
