Description

This course provides essential skills in chainsaw maintenance and safe use for cross-cutting timber. Candidates will learn how to inspect, maintain and sharpen a chainsaw, ensuring that the chainsaw is functioning correctly and safe to use. Candidates will then learn the correct starting procedure to ensure safety features are working, and the chainsaw is running correctly. A range of cutting techniques will be shown to allow candidates to cut timber safely and efficiently.

This course is for candidates over 16 years old.

Do I need previous Qualification or Experience?

No previous qualification or experience is required for this course or the assessment.

What will be covered in the course?

  • Identifying the information required for an effective risk assessment.

  • Identifying the potential hazards/risks involved with maintenance and operating a chainsaw.

  • Select the correct tools for maintenance.

  • Identify safety features on a chainsaw.

  • Carry out maintenance in accordance with the manufactures' handbook.

  • Identify Personal Protective Equipment required for maintenance and operation of a chainsaw.

  • Preparing a safe site.

  • Preparing a chainsaw for use and starting from both hot and cold.

  • Safe starting of a chainsaw, ensuring that pre cutting checks are carried out before use.

  • Assessing and identifying Tension and Compression in timber.

  • Cross-cutting timber safely and accurately.

What equipment will I need?

  • PPE that is in good order and meets the minimum standards. Chainsaw trousers, type A or C. Chainsaw boots. Chainsaw gloves. Helmet with eye and ear protection. (If you are unsure, please contact us at info@practicalarb.co.uk)

  • Clothing suitable for time of year.

  • Rear handle chainsaw (recommended 15" guide bar).

  • Fuel and chain oil.

  • Maintenance and sharpening tools suitable for chainsaw.
